La Paz, BCS

We ended up spending quite a bit more time in La Paz than we originally planned and delighted in walking the streets of this town. Many have written about what to do and the many interesting museums, markets, and restaurants to visit. Rather than attempt to capture this place in total, we wanted to share 7 places we enjoyed during our extended summer days.

Our band name is yet to be determined

We were there in July, so it was hot and the days were long. The rhythm of the town was simple this time of year. People were up early and out on the malecón and streets from sunrise till about 11 AM, when the heat pressed on. Then till about 7 PM people stayed out of the direct sun where possible. We matched this, exploring on foot till heat got to us. Then, we’d start down the malecón, kids on the scooters and us on foot. Enjoy the warm air, breeze, and fellow strollers. The occasional helado capped the evening.

Without further ado, 2 places to feed your soul and 5 places to feed your body.

Feed your soul

  • Museo de Antropologia e Historia de Baja California Sur - A small rotating exhibit downstairs with several floors of permanent exhibits upstairs. It was here that we learned about humans first inhabiting the Baja 12,000 years ago when it was a temperate forest landscape. Astonishing to think of the climate change since then and the adaptation of the people who lived here.

  • Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur (website) - A number of rotating exhibits, but what most captivated us was a large mural on the ground floor which portrayed a long view of human history on the Baja. The mural is spectacularly painted and quite thought provoking. And the museum has AC, perfect for a hot mid-day break.

Feed your body

  • La Mäsa Panadería - Our favorite place for second breakfast - aka pastries and coffee - on a hot summer morning. Beautiful storefront set on a side street with indoor and outdoor seating. The pastries are divine. We will go again, I’m sure of it.

  • Hana Sushi - Very cool setting with good sushi. No reservations and it can get busy at peak times (around 8 PM when we were there), but if you can snag a table, a perfect place to relax after the sun has set and enjoy a meal with others in a tree shaded patio.

  • Nómada Fresh & Organics (website) - Perfect place to start the day. Great fresh fruits and vegetables to enjoy under the shade of trees on the sidewalk. Also has large pancakes and waffles for those who just want to start their day with a bang. And smoothies. And coffee. There is something for everyone.

  • El Autentico Súper Burro - Our favorite of the “we just want tacos” places. Of course, they serve far more than tacos and we would often get one of the other great plates on the menu. Plenty of outdoor seating, just a bit out of the busiest part of downtown. Very close to Marina de La Paz.

  • MoMo Pasteleria BC (website) - A small pastry shop off of Cinco de Mayo. Not much seating, but a delicious array of treats.
